The UK's Leading Muay Thai Head Guard Range
Muay Thai head guards are the last line of defence between your face and a training partner's hook, knee or elbow during hard sparring. A quality head guard absorbs and redistributes impact across the shell and padding, reducing the chance of cuts and limiting the cumulative strain that comes from weekly sparring rounds. At Made4Fighters we carry over 50 head guards from nine brands — covering everything from entry-level synthetic shell training guards to top-grade leather headgear built for sanctioned competition.
Thai boxing head guards are designed for the specific demands of Muay Thai and kickboxing: cheek protectors wide enough to withstand a roundhouse kick, a low-profile shell that maintains line of sight during clinch exchanges, and a secure fit that won't shift under impact. Many styles double as boxing training guards or MMA headgear, making them a versatile investment for fighters who cross-train. We have been the UK's authorised stockist of the industry's leading brands since 2007, supplying clubs, amateur fighters and professionals across Britain with protective gear that genuinely meets the demands of the sport.
Top Muay Thai Head Guard Brands
Fumetsu Muay Thai Head Guards is Made4Fighters' flagship head guard range and the largest we carry. The Ghost S3 series is built around a full-coverage synthetic leather shell with sculpted cheek guards and a secure hook-and-loop fastening, priced at £44.99 across seven colourways from Black/Black to White/Gold. Step up to the FMT1 Thai Boxing Head Guard for an upgraded microfibre construction and extended cheek coverage at £74.99. Two guard profiles, nine colourways — there is a Fumetsu head guard for every training style and gym colour.
Bytomic Muay Thai Head Guards makes the most accessible quality head guard in our range. The Axis V2 (£45.99) is a mid-weight synthetic leather sparring guard in Black, Blue/White, Black/White and Red — comfortable across a wide head size range and durable enough for club use. For clubs and budget-conscious beginners, the Red Label Tournament series starts at £30.39 — the lowest entry point in the collection. Bytomic's combination of synthetic leather quality and competitive pricing makes it the go-to recommendation for anyone buying their first dedicated head guard.
Venum Muay Thai Head Guards covers three distinct tiers. The Elite Head Guard (£100) is Thailand-made with a premium PU leather construction available in nine colourways including distinctive camo and pink editions. The Challenger Open Face (£54.98) is the entry point for fighters who want the Venum name without the premium price. The Elite Iron Matte Black (£149.99) is the prestige top-of-range option: a minimalist matte shell with reinforced frame designed for serious sparring. Venum's range suits all levels, from first-time sparrers to seasoned competitors.
Leone 1947 Muay Thai Head Guards brings Italian design heritage to fight training gear. The DNA series (£67.99) is a lightweight synthetic leather guard with integrated cheek protection, available as a standard model and in a with-cheek-protectors variant. The Greatest series (£149.99) is real leather construction — in Black, Red and Blue — and is the premium choice for fighters wanting genuine leather durability and a competition-quality feel. Leone's six head guards sit in the mid-to-premium tier and offer something genuinely distinct from Asian-origin brands.
Our range also includes the Sandee Closed Face (from £49.99, Thailand-made leather), 8 Weapons Unlimited (£45.49, microfibre), Elion Paris Full Face and Integral (£79–£120, Bangkok-made), Twins Special HGL-3 (£100, Thai leather), Top Ten Nong Han (£56.99), Ringhorns Nitro and Charger (£49–£80), and Century C-Gear Determination (£54.99) — covering every style and price point in the market.
Picking Your First (or Next) Head Guard
For beginners — under £50
Start with a durable synthetic leather shell that can handle frequent use without breaking the bank. The Bytomic Red Label Tournament (from £30.39) and Bytomic Axis V2 (£45.99) are the best value entry points — robust enough for regular club sparring, with an open-face profile that helps beginners read incoming punches. Pair with Muay Thai gloves and hand wraps and you are set for your first sparring sessions.
For regular sparring — £50 to £110
The Fumetsu Ghost S3 (£44.99), Venum Challenger Open Face (£54.98), Ringhorns Charger (£49.98) and Sandee Authentic Closed Face (£49.99) sit in the £45–£75 band and offer synthetic or PU leather construction that holds up to three or four sessions a week. Add Muay Thai shin guards and a groin guard to complete your sparring set.
For competition or sanctioned use
Leather construction is preferred for graded sparring and sanctioned bouts. Sandee Closed Face (£74.99), Twins Special HGL-3 (£100), Leone The Greatest (£149.99) and Venum Elite Iron (£149.99) all meet the quality standard for competition-level headgear. Complete your protection stack with Muay Thai hand wraps and a properly fitted mouthguard.
Open-Face, Closed-Face and Full-Face: Which Style?
Muay Thai head guards come in three protection profiles, each suited to a different training context.
Open-face guards — such as the Fumetsu Ghost S3, Venum Elite and Bytomic Axis V2 — cover the crown, temples and cheeks but leave the front of the face exposed. They offer the widest field of vision and the most natural feel for pad work and sparring where you can read punches clearly. Most Muay Thai gyms use open-face guards for technical sparring rounds.
Closed-face guards — such as the Sandee Closed Face and Bytomic Red Label Tournament — extend a bar or padded bridge across the nose and chin, reducing the risk of cuts and broken nose from straight shots. Popular in amateur competition formats and lighter-contact sparring sessions.
Full-face guards — Elion Paris Full Face and Elion Uncage — wrap completely around the face for maximum facial protection. These are ideal for beginners during their first heavy sparring sessions and for certain kickboxing and TKD competition formats.
Materials, Construction and Care
The standard head guard shell is synthetic or PU leather — Fumetsu, Bytomic, Venum Challenger and 8 Weapons all use this construction. Synthetic leather is lightweight, easy to wipe clean, and holds its shape under sustained training loads. Genuine leather — found in Sandee Closed Face (Thailand-made), Twins Special HGL-3, Fairtex HG13 and Leone The Greatest — is denser, heavier and more durable across years of use; leather guards also break in to the individual wearer's head shape over time, giving a progressively better fit.
Care is straightforward: wipe down the outer shell with a damp cloth after every session, dry fully before storing, and use a deodorising spray to prevent odour build-up inside the lining. Never leave a damp head guard sealed in a sports bag — mould and lining degradation follow quickly and cannot be reversed.
Muay Thai Head Guards vs Boxing Head Guards vs MMA Head Guards
The disciplines share headgear designs but each is optimised differently. Boxing head guards typically feature higher cheek padding and a tighter overall shell — the priority is absorbing straight punches and hooks with minimal lateral head movement. MMA head guards are lighter with a more open profile, designed for grappling compatibility and takedown defence alongside striking. Muay Thai head guards occupy the middle ground: full cheek coverage for round kicks and elbows, open-face visibility for reading the clinch, and a lightweight shell that does not restrict neck movement. A Muay Thai head guard will serve kickboxing training equally well; if you cross-train Muay Thai with MMA, our MMA head guards pair naturally with MMA training gloves for a complete cross-training set.
