Frequently Asked Questions

Are Bytomic Muay Thai head guards good for sparring?

Yes — both the Axis V2 flagship and the Red Label Tournament value tier use high-density EVA foam suitable for full-contact Muay Thai sparring. The synthetic leather shell handles club-level use without the foam compaction that affects cheaper guards within a year.

Important: the Bytomic Defender is a separate point-sparring guard for karate and taekwondo — it is NOT suitable for Muay Thai contact and is not included in this Muay Thai range.

What's the difference between Bytomic Axis V2 and Red Label Tournament?

The Axis V2 is Bytomic's flagship head guard with denser EVA foam, better long-term recovery, and a slightly more refined fit. The Red Label Tournament is the value tier with lighter foam density and the same adjustment system.

Pick the Axis V2 for three or more sessions a week or year-round use. Pick the Red Label Tournament for occasional sparring, first-tournament prep, or kids progressing through light contact.

Can I use a Bytomic Muay Thai head guard for boxing or MMA?

Yes — both the Axis V2 and Red Label Tournament are tagged for boxing, kickboxing, MMA and Muay Thai sparring. They are multi-discipline open-face training guards. For boxing-specific guards with reinforced cheek padding, see our boxing head guards. For MMA-specific guards with reduced profile for takedown work, see our MMA head guards.

What size Bytomic head guard do I need?

Bytomic head guards come in two sizes: S/M fits adult head circumferences of approximately 54–58 cm, L/XL fits 58–62 cm. Measure around the widest part of your head, just above the eyebrows and around the back.

When sizing is borderline, size up — the chin strap secures the fit and excess shell sits more comfortably than tight padding pressing against your temples during long rounds.

Bytomic Muay Thai head guards — UK club-tier protection

Bytomic is the UK's largest combat-sports distributor and built its own-brand head guard line around the value sweet-spot UK Muay Thai clubs actually need: tournament-rated synthetic leather sparring guards at price points that survive realistic club rotation. Two product tiers — Axis V2 premium and Red Label Tournament value — both designed around Muay Thai contact (full clinch sparring, leg kicks, knees) rather than karate or taekwondo point-sparring foam-dip construction.

How to pick the right Bytomic head guard

For adult Muay Thai fighters training three or more sessions a week, the Axis V2 is the right call — denser EVA foam, sculpted cheek coverage shaped for round kicks and elbow exchanges, and the open-face cut that maintains sightlines during clinch transitions. For occasional sparrers, first-tournament fighters, or growing kids stepping up from light contact, the Red Label Tournament is the value tier — comparable coverage with slightly lower foam density, the same adjustable strap system, and a noticeably lower price that makes losing one to a gym bag less painful.

Construction and materials

Both ranges use a Pakistan-made synthetic leather shell with EVA foam padding — vegan, washable, and the standard construction across the UK club value tier. The Axis V2 uses higher-density EVA in a sculpted shape with extended cheek coverage, anchored by adjustable Velcro at the back and chin. The Red Label Tournament uses similar shell material at a slightly lower foam density and trims the cheek shaping to a more open profile. Both are open-face cuts designed for Muay Thai visibility — not the fully enclosed point-sparring helmet shape used in karate or taekwondo, which is a different category of head guard entirely.

Sizing and fit

Bytomic head guards size adult Small, Medium and Large with adjustable Velcro at the back and chin for fine-tuning. Sizing runs true-to-UK-average head circumference; if you wear a peaked cap on size Medium-Large, the head guard Medium-Large will fit. The Axis V2 sits slightly more snug than the Red Label Tournament — the denser foam takes a session or two to break in but then settles into a stable fit. Both are unisex sized.

Bytomic vs other Muay Thai head guard brands

At the UK club-value tier, Bytomic is the most consistent choice for Muay Thai head guards — explicit MT-contact construction (not the point-sparring foam-dip used in their Defender model for karate/TKD), broader colourway selection than competing value tiers, and the UK distributor that most British clubs already source from. Compare with Fumetsu head guards for the UK MMA-community pick with the popular Ghost S3 series, Venum Muay Thai head guards for the broader tier ladder including the Elite Iron premium flagship, or the Leone 1947 head guards Italian premium pick with DNA and The Greatest leather construction. The Muay Thai head guards parent page has the complete brand comparison.
