Progress BJJ Belt Length Size Guide

Progress BJJ Belts follow the standard IBJJF-compliant A1 – A4 length convention used by every major BJJ supplier. The size is matched to the gi size, not directly to your waist — once tied with a proper IBJJF knot around your gi jacket, you'll have a tail of roughly 15 – 25 cm on each side. Progress belts are 100% cotton, woven thick to hold rank stripes cleanly.

Fit tip: pick the belt size that matches the gi you'll wear it with. A1 belt for an A1 gi, A2 for A2, and so on. If you're between gi sizes (e.g., A1L on a slim build), use the lower belt number — a slightly shorter belt sits more securely than a too-long one.

Belt Size Length Pairs With Gi Size
A1 240 cm (94.5") A0, A1, A1L
A2 260 cm (102.4") A2, A2L
A3 280 cm (110.2") A3, A3L
A4 300 cm (118.1") A4, A5

Belt lengths are approximate ±5 cm. All belts are pre-shrunk but expect ~3% shrinkage on first wash.

How to choose

  • Match to gi size: the simplest rule. Buy the belt that matches the size code printed on your gi jacket label.
  • Wrap test: when tied with the standard IBJJF knot (two wraps around the gi, tails out front), each tail should hang 15–25 cm below the knot. Shorter = too small; longer than 30 cm = too big.
  • Rank stripes: all Progress belts include a black bar for instructor stripes (or a red bar on the black belt, per IBJJF tradition).
  • Care: never wash unless absolutely necessary. Air out after rolling. Most BJJ tradition holds belts shouldn't be washed at all — the dirt is the experience.
