Fly Glove Size Guide
Boxing gloves are measured in ounces (oz). A higher oz means more padding and weight — not a bigger hand fit. The right size depends on what you're training for and your bodyweight. Use the table below as a starting point, then check with your coach if your gym has its own sparring policy.
Adult training and sparring gloves
| Glove size | Best for | User weight guidance |
|---|---|---|
| 8oz | Competitive fights, light pad and bag work. Minimal padding — not built for long training sessions. | Under 45 kg |
| 10oz | Competitive fights, pad work, fitness. Lightweight and compact. 10oz XL versions exist for larger hands needing a bigger compartment in the same weight. | Under 50 kg |
| 12oz | All-round training for smaller hands. Pad work, bag work, very light sparring only. Comfortable for most beginners under 60 kg. | Under 60 kg |
| 14oz | The most common all-round training glove. Pad work, bag work, and sparring for most people. Solid protection, manageable weight. | Under 72 kg |
| 16oz | Standard sparring weight in most UK gyms. More padding to protect your training partner. Works for bag and pad work too but feels heavier. | 72 kg and above |
| 18oz | Heavier sparring and for boxers with larger hands or in heavier weight classes. Most padding, best protection for your partner. | Heavier weight classes / larger hands |
These are general guidelines. Your gym may have its own sparring rules — always check with your coach before sparring sessions.
Bag mitts (hand fit)
Bag mitts are sized Small, Medium, or Large by hand fit — they're not weighted in ounces. Pick by your everyday glove size: if you usually wear a small or medium glove, take the matching size in a bag mitt. Try one size up if you wrap your hands before training.
Kids gloves (4oz)
Kids gloves are 4oz and designed for smaller hands and lighter bodyweights. If your child is approaching adult sizing or training competitively, 8oz adult gloves may fit better.
How to choose
- Training only? 14oz is the safe default for most adults.
- Sparring? 16oz in most UK gyms, 14oz if you're under 60 kg and your gym allows it, 18oz if you're in a heavier weight class.
- Competition only? 8oz or 10oz — these are not for general training.
- Pad and bag work, smaller hands? 12oz works well.
