Rival head guards are sized by head circumference — measure your head with a soft tape and pick the size that brackets your measurement. The S/M and L/XL options on certain RHG models have adjustable straps to span both adjacent sizes, useful when fitting a coach's head guard across multiple students.
Fit tip: Head guards should sit snug enough to stay put through 3 minutes of rolling but not so tight they crush your forehead. If your measurement falls exactly between sizes, size up — padding compresses, foam does not stretch.
| Size | Head circumference (in) | Head circumference (cm) | US hat size | Bodyweight (guide) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | 20.875–21.625" | 53–55 cm | 6 ⅝ – 6 ⅞ | Up to 132 lb |
| S/M | 19–22.5" | 48–57 cm | 6 – 7 ⅛ | Up to 165 lb |
| M | 22–22.75" | 56–58 cm | 7 – 7 ¼ | 135–165 lb |
| L | 23.25–24" | 59–61 cm | 7 ⅜ – 7 ⅝ | 165–190 lb |
| L/XL | 21–25" | 53–63 cm | 6 ⅝ – 7 ¾ | 165+ lb |
| XL | 24.375–25.25" | 62–64 cm | 7 ¾ – 8 | 190+ lb |
How to measure your head
- Wrap a soft tape around the largest part of your head — about an inch above the ears and across the forehead.
- Keep the tape level all the way around. The tape should be snug but not compressed against the skull.
- Take the measurement bareheaded — no cap, no wrap, hair pushed flat.
- If you have a thick hairline or wear a hairband for sparring, add half an inch.
