Vale Tudo started as less of a sport than a challenge to mutual combat. Claims of superiority between gyms and styles fueled fierce rivalries. Attempts to organize into something greater than gym challenges and brawls went out the window in 1995. Renzo Gracie represented jiu jitsu against Eugenio Tadeu’s Luta Livre style at Pentagon Combat. The official result stands as a no contest (fans rioted). Renzo wore one of the earliest pairs of Bad Boy Vale Tudo shorts, and the São Paulo instituted a ban on Vale Tudo and mixed martial arts for over a decade. Martial arts have grown up since then, but the origins are unforgettable.
